That Pesky Scale
Welcome to Mindful Weighs Wednesday team! Today I would like to take a fresh look at the way you view your current weight - is it through the lens of math or drama? Math is facts - there’s not a lot of drama around a math problem. Losing weight is math - you weigh a number and you want to lose weight. It is simply a number - a fact. The drama comes into play once you start having thoughts about this number, which leads to feelings - perhaps something like shame - that may cause you to engage in activities such as overeating, leading weight gain. You create evidence to prove this thought correct. In order to lose weight you must change what you have been doing, you must change your thoughts.
This program is not a diet mentality. It is not about willpower, or resistance - it is about living a conscious life, and becoming aware of the thoughts you choose, learn how the thoughts trigger emotions, which lead you to act in ways that may, or may not serve you. The scale is just a chunk of medal, yet has so much power over how many people feel. Take back control of your life. It’s never the number - whether you see it going up or down - it is always the thoughts your associate with the number. What you think about this number will determine whether you make changes or not.
In order to start becoming more aware of your thoughts on this topic I encourage you to start paying attention. Before you step on the scale write down how you are feeling. Now lets take a look at the number and answer these questions:
How do you feel about this number?
What do you believe this number means?
Are these thoughts true? Really true?
The important part will be to recognize that it is not the number causing your feelings; but instead it is your thoughts about the number. Describe what it feels like to be in a body that weighs this number. What can you do right now to choose joy, regardless of the number? You see, you always have every feeling available to you. The thoughts you choose will lead you to the feelings you need to make real changes. Take the time to understand math as fact, and leave the drama to the movies.
