What To Do With The Leftover Cookies
Welcome to the final Mindful Weighs Wednesday of 2017! These last couple months have been so exciting and I look forward to the next year. Hopefully everyone has enjoyed the holiday season, and is looking forward to an amazing 2018!
During this time of year you may find yourself with leftover cookies, cakes, candies and struggle with what to do. You are trying to lose weight, yet you have these fantastic treats that were given as gifts - what do you do?
If you have thoughts like “Eating sweets is part of life”, “Cutting back is painful”, or “I can’t waste this”, you may notice yourself continuously going to the platter for more. So the struggle becomes, you have a thought you want to lose weight, yet you also have the above thoughts that give you feelings that drive actions such as eating the cookies, which in the end does not support what you really want.
I encourage you to take a look at one of those thoughts - “I can’t waste this” - and really dig into it. What comes up when you think this? For some people it is a belief held for so long it seems like just a fact, but it is an optional thought. Consider this - if you eat food that your body does not need for fuel, are you wasting it? Aren’t you just carrying the waste with you on your body as fat? Would you rather waste food in the garbage or on your body? Why?
The portion sizes today are so much more, it is almost impossible to not waste food in order to get to your ideal weight. So take some time and think about what you make it mean when you have to discard excess. If you want to lose weight you will have to look at your current thinking, which will go against your deepest instincts to avoid pain and seek pleasure. You must find thoughts that will help reduce your over desire to over eat in order to become part of the crowd that loses the weight, and keeps it off.
We are approaching the New Year and so many people will be making resolutions to lose weight. Often by March those thoughts have gone to the wayside and old thinking takes over, leading to old feelings, driving old actions, with the same old results. How do you want to approach 2018? If you truly want to make it an amazing year with different results I encourage you to focus on the thoughts that will trigger the feelings you need to drive the appropriate actions. Take some time to think about, and write down, why you are willing to go through the river of misery - the discomfort - in order to get to the other side and accomplish your goals. Next week we will look more at your commitment and why it matters.
It is an honor to serve you, and I promise if you do the work you will totally rock it in 2018!
