Does Your Job Make You Crazy?
Saturday often provides a little break from what you may consider your crazy full time job. Let’s face it - we all, at some level, have days when we wan’t to pull our hair out. You may have the best job ever but some days you just toss your hands up and say - this job makes me CRAZY! You may even reach for a glass of wine at the end of the day to feel better. If you are one of my gals trying to drink less I want to offer a different option in order to be more in control.
In this line of coaching we talk about how the Circumstance is ALWAYS neutral. Remember - a circumstance is something you do not have control over - the weather, and other people for example. So, when you think your boss or coworkers are nuts, or your company is not equipped with the materials you need at a given moment, or customers are yelling at you - it is all neutral. Now - how do you want to feel about it?
Keep in mind, your thoughts trigger your feelings, and you are always in control of your thoughts. Let’s use the example of other people. You may come to me and say something along the lines of “my management team makes me crazy because they expect me to do things without the proper items I need”. Let’s break it down to see how we can feel better, without the extra glass of wine, by using our tool - The Model - in action —
Circumstance - You have a management Team (this is a fact, can be proven in a court of law)
Thought - They make you crazy not having what is needed to do job properly
Feeling - (what do you feel when you think that thought?) Frustrated
Action - (what do you do when you feel that way?) Focus on what you don’t have - lose focus of to do list
Result - Don’t get your job done properly (Notice -the result is in alignment with the thought).
Now, I’m not saying decide to think life is great because you don’t have what you need, but you can shift a thought slightly, achieve different results, and feel better. The fact is - the circumstance is not changing so how do you want to feel about it?
C - Management team (stays same - we never change the C)
T - They may not have what I need but I will do my best with what I have
F - Determined
A - Focus on actions I can control and accomplish
R - I do my best work (Again - the result is in alignment with the thought).
Your job does not make you crazy - your thoughts about the job do. Enjoy your weekend and keep this in mind the next time you encounter a crazy day at work!
