Having Your Own Back as You Learn To Drink Less



Welcome back to Thinking about Drinking Thursday, where we discuss tools to help you drink less.  If you are a highly functioning gal who has decided to cut back, or quit drinking - this is for you.  If you have been saying you want to drink less, but haven't been successful I want to help by sharing some tools with you.  

The negative self talk around over drinking can be maddening.  You say - I don’t want to drink too much tonight and then after one, comes two, and three and the next thing you know you wake up the next day berating yourself for having that extra glass.  First of all - imagine in you spoke to someone else the way you speak to yourself?  Take note - would you ever want to hang out with someone who spoke to you the way you speak to yourself?  

In order to be successful at drinking less you need to become more compassionate with yourself.  Minor shifts in your thinking can move you along the path to accomplish your drinking goals.  For example - a thought like - I had two glasses and then couldn’t stop drinking — is that a true thought?  I mean, you did eventually stop correct?  How do you feel when you think that thought?  I might guess - defeated or regretful.  And when you feel defeated or regretful how do you act?  Often times, people will drink more in order to feel better, and therefore the result is you keep drinking.  

Instead try on a thought like - I had more than I wanted, but I am learning the tools to drink less.  How do you feel when you think that thought?  Likely more empowered, and your actions may be you continue to work on learning all you can, and the result is you begin to drink less.  

Just look at how you feel when you think these two different thoughts.  Your thoughts trigger your  feelings, and your feelings drive your actions which give you your results.  So make sure you are being nice to yourself, and think thoughts that will serve you as you work to drink less.  Consider the person in the mirror your BFF - I hope you always have her back!
