How to Feel Proud About Drinking Thinking

How do you think you will feel when you start to see the results of drinking or weighing less?  What if you could feel that way right now - on your way to that number?  My friends, I want to share some fantastic news with you - you should - and you can!

The reason we do everything is because of our feelings.  How we feel is always determined by how we think, so we can truly create any feeling we want.  Let’s say I’m working with a client who wants get to a certain number of drinks, or a certain weight.  I always ask her how she will feel once she gets there.  Proud, and accomplished are common emotions that come up.  To start they feel typically feel shame and depression, which will not drive actions to accomplish the goals.  In order to get to the next level you must start having what you think will be the future feelings, now.  You need to feel proud and accomplished in order to drive your actions forward.

Here is an example of what I mean.  You want to to start drinking less.  Let’s say you currently have the thought - I’m such a wino - I could never give it up, which makes you feel depressed or shameful.  Those feelings don’t feel good, so in order to avoid them, you drink more.  Over drinking and over eating are fabulous ways to escape terrible feelings.  The problem is, you wake up feeling worse, beating yourself up, and the cycle continues.

I encourage you to start shifting your thoughts.  I do not mean you go to something like - I can’t wait to be completely sober… my guess is that will not likely ring true.  Instead, become an actor in your life for a little bit, and try on some new thoughts.  Would something like - I’m working on learning new ways to cut back make you feel different?  Thinking that thought may feel a little more confident - which will drive your actions to take steps and find new ways to cut back on drinking, which could lead you to a result of less wine.  I encourage you to start working on finding those feelings you think you will have in the future, today.  Trust me - you don’t just wake up one morning, snap your fingers and feel that way.  Start the process now as you move to the next best version of yourself.  You totally got this!
