How to Find Your Strongest Indicator of Success
The Superbowl teams are set and all the fans of New England and Philadelphia are getting ready. As kids the players on these teams have dreamed about getting to a Super Bowl since they were little. Each one of them has a compelling reason to get to this level, but even us non Super Bowl playing folks have compelling reasons for what we do in life. I have clients that are shooting for big goals, and we often talk to about the compelling reason they have for wanting to drink less, or weigh less.
The strongest indicator of success is resilience. Resilience is the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness. It’s the effect of a compelling reason to complete something and to evolve. When we lived in caves in order to evolve we had to move from discomfort and physical suffering in order to survive, which was the compelling reason. Now a days we live in some pretty fine conditions and in order to evolve we need to move towards discomfort. So if you are looking to drink less, or weigh less you need to decide what your commitment is, what your compelling reason is. This reason is a created stance in which you know what you will do or not do regardless of what does or doesn’t happen.
First, explore why you don’t already have what you want. There has to be a competing reason you have not accomplished your goal. For example, you want to drink less, yet you enjoy going out with your girlfriends to catch up over a glass, or two, of wine. Take a look at that. Understand it is a choice. You have the option to go out with your girlfriends and catch up if that is what is most important to you, and you can choose to do it without wine. Not drinking the wine is not the hard part - you just don’t order it. The hard part is the discomfort you will feel the first couple of times you do it. Once you become conscious of this you will recognize uncomfortable is only a feeling, and you can handle it.
Next, don’t allow your brain to go into confusion. Any time you hear I don't know in your mind notice that is confusion. Ask yourself - if I did know, what would I do. Make a decision and commit. Take a moment to write down the commitment and your reason why. Make sure this reason is really motivating to you. If you are looking to lose weight you may have a good reason to be healthy, but is that as motivating as I want to look awesome in those new jeans I bought? You decide. There will be obstacles along the way, and your commitment is that you understand that fact, you are willing to be uncomfortable under any circumstance and you are certain you can handle any obstacle. Remain conscious every day of your level of commitment and train your brain to be focused and filter directions in a way that keeps you evolving. If you do the work you will be lifting the best reward there is - the amazing life you create on purpose!
