How To Hit Your Target Goal

Something highly unusual happened last night - I had control of the remote! Well, I guess I should say it was a nice combination of football playoffs and Golden Globes - but it both cases I was able to watch some great performances, so it got me thinking about the importance of Mental Rehearsal.
When you are looking to accomplish a new goal it is important to begin believing new thoughts. Think about the changes you want to make, and visualize you have already made them - how would you act differently? For example - if you are looking to lose weight imagine you are already at your ideal weight - what would you think about? If you are looking to drink less - visualize yourself walking into the local wine bar - how would you act?
You often hear athletes talk about visualization and anytime you perform a new action - be it a movie role, or piano playing, or shooting a bow and arrow, rehearsal is what gets you better. There really is something to this. The Hebbian Learning Theory is a theory in neuroscience that simply put, can be summarized as “Cells that fire together wire together”. If you have groups of neurons that are repeatedly activated they will build stronger connections. In 1995 a study was published which looked at individuals playing the piano. The functional brain scans showed the individuals that mentally rehearsed playing the piano activated their brain the same way as the ones physically playing the piano. This is why it is so important for you to begin rehearsing your “act as if”.
Take some time this week and think about how you would practice for this role. Begin thinking about what you are doing well in your new role, and what you need to practice. Imagine you are at your ideal weight - or imagine you do not have the extra glasses of wine - how do you feel? Remember - you are thinking like the person who has already accomplished this goal. Write down some of your new thoughts and practice them daily - this will help you build the new belief and keep you moving forward. If you do the work you will get an amazing award - the best you - now go ‘break a leg’ - I can’t wait to watch!
