How To Keep Your Resolutions
We were recently away for a couple of days which allowed me the opportunity to do some extra reading. Evolve Your Brain, by Joe Dispenza, is a fascinating look at the science changing your mind. It takes an in depth look at the most amazing machine we are all given to use for free - and that my friends is of course our brain.
There has been a lot of research done on the evolution of the brain, and only more to come. A topic he discussed, which seems appropriate this week with everyones resolutions, is the idea of change being uncomfortable. When you try to do something different (eat cleaner, drink less) you no longer have the same feelings to relate to in order to define your self. You literally change the chemical makeup in your brain which is why you often say things like “It just didn’t feel right”.
Our brain and body likes “normal”. When you interrupt the feedback loop between your brain and your body it causes discomfort. Often times this is where our resolutions go to the wayside, because in order to “feel better”, we revert back to what is known and “feels right”. When you experience change you leave the familiar behind, and you don’t yet have feelings of the future because you haven't experienced it yet. This in between stage is where you need to keep moving forward in order to blow your own mind.
In previous postings I’ve discussed embracing discomfort - this is what I’m talking about. In order to create a change you are going to need to change your thoughts, memories and associations of what your “normal” currently is. Often people have the initial excitement of the idea to change (ie: New Years Resolutions) but the dreams get smothered with the memories of the past, what seems to feel right, and often revert back to old patterns. Make this year different - hold on through the discomfort and make your dreams come true! Make 2018 unlike any other year - you totally got this sister!
