How To Never Lose That Loving Feeling
I recently saw an ad for the release of Top Gun 2 scheduled for 2019. I may be aging myself here, but I loved the original. Do you recall the scene where they were all singing “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling”? It brings a smile to my face. But I recently looked over the lyrics and guess I didn’t realize how much “I need your love” is in there. Depending on who is saying they need your love, it could be interpreted as a little creepy and weird. I know, I know - not so creepy perhaps if it is Tom Cruise. However, in case Tom is not available, I want to offer an amazing idea - anyone, at anytime, can have all the love they want. In fact, any emotion is available to you at any time.
Feelings are caused by what we think. In order to understand this - imagine you have a lotto ticket in your hand, and as you check the numbers you realize you WON - millions of dollars! How do you feel? Excited? Ecstatic? I mean there could be so many happy emotions to choose from. Now - imagine after one minute a friend interrupts - “wait, looks like you read the numbers wrong - it’s 22 not 27”… and you realize your bank balance remains the same. What feelings do you have now? Disappointed? Unhappy? Although your feelings changed, the lotto ticket never changed, the numbers never changed - only your thoughts changed.
You are responsible for how you feel, based on your thoughts. I know as children we were often taught not to make mom and dad angry by doing a specific activity, or not to make little Johnny feel sad for whatever reason. Take a minute and think about this - do we really have that much power we make someone feel a certain way? Think back to your younger years when you tried to make that boyfriend or girlfriend like you - how did that go? We each experience our own feelings based on our own thoughts, and you can decide you will feel love towards anyone - and it doesn’t matter if they close their eyes on a kiss or even criticize you for the little things you do.
This idea is so freeing. You hold the power to feel however you want to. The importance of this concept is in the fact that your feelings will drive your actions, which give you the results you want in life. Start taking some time to pay attention to your feelings this week. What do you notice as your top three feelings on a daily basis? You can handle any feeling - even discomfort. Often we think we always need to feel good. Always wanting to feel good is where we tend to reach for the extra wine, or extra cookies to avoid our true feelings. You don’t have to continue this struggle. What are the top three feelings you want to feel on a daily basis? This is where the work comes in my friends - find the thoughts you need to feel that way.
