What Can Love, a Dog, and Laundry Have In Common?
On weekends I like to catch up on Rachael Ray shows from the prior week. I just finished one that brought tears to my eyes. Of course, it had to do with a rescue dog - Squish, and a vet from Texas that saved him. But as many of us dog lovers know, it is often the other way around. Imagine if every relationship included the unconditional love we have come to know with dogs.
If given a choice I think most people would want to choose love towards someone. Yet, most of the time we end up choosing disappointment, anger or frustration. We have expectations of people and when they don’t meet them we make it mean something, and feel bad. I want you to picture a loved one in your mind. How often do you find yourself saying things like - he should do this, or she should act that way, or how could they do that? For example, if you expect your significant other to fold the clothes in the dryer and they don’t, how do you feel? Are you disappointed and angry? I’m not suggesting you don't work as a team, or you don’t have requests of a partner, but when you choose your feelings, based on their actions, you are the one that suffers. This could be a very disempowering place to be.
Instead, take responsibility for how you feel. Decide on purpose how you want to feel about the person if they don’t fold the laundry. It’s not the fact the laundry isn’t folded that causes the anger and disappointment, it’s the thought that the other person should have done it. The negative feelings can be easily changed with a change in thinking to feel better, vs changing the partner. Some may say this sounds crazy - but how crazy have you been making yourself trying to change the other, an how well has hat worked for you so far?
This weekend I encourage you to look at some rules and ideas you may have created that sets you up for negative emotions instead of something wonderful. Unconditional love is a gift you give yourself. It’s for you, and it makes your life easier, not harder. Believe me - unconditional love is not just for saints, or dogs; it is for anyone who wants to feel amazing. That’s our rescue dog above - he’s pretty amazing too!
