Your Past Does Not Determine Your Future
I was cleaning out over the weekend and stumbled upon an old college paper on Self Awareness. Don’t laugh - it was done with a typewriter and white out, but so fascinating to look at my brain back then. We never had courses to teach us how to improve our mental health, therefore I thought I would share some pointers I noticed, and help you get ahead of the class. If you are looking to cut back on drinking or lose weight this concept can be quite helpful.
One thing I noticed in this piece of work was how much lived in the past. I discussed being overweight as a child and how being picked on influenced me (remember - this was a COLLEGE paper - years after 3rd grade). Another example of living in the past could also show up for someone who was the star high school football QB, now 45, with a “dad bod” reminiscing on the “good ol days”. Or maybe you have a thought like - I’ve always had 3 glasses of wine at night. Living in the past may come with different thoughts, and from not wanting to deal with your current situation, or being afraid of the future. What I know now, is living in the past has no upside, and you don’t have to believe just because it was that way, it has to stay that way. When you catch yourself looking at the past, consider all of it lessons - no mistakes, and move on.
Instead use your energy to enjoy the moment and reach for the stars - you do have total control over your future. First, consider what you are currently grateful for in your life. Next, I encourage you to write down the outcomes you are looking for in your life. Having a plan and continued focus on your goals will help your personal growth. When you stop fighting with the past and start going after your dreams you will also notice your energy levels increase. You have so many years of life left - decide how you want to tell your story. You may have faced tests through the years, but now you can take the lessons you learned and start writing your next chapter!
