Do You Want to Lose Weight?
Welcome Back to Mindful Weighs Wednesday where we talk about tools to help you lose weight. One thing many of my clients, friends, and family have in common is they want to lose weight. I think there is a very large percentage to the population that would say they want to lose weight. So why is it that so many people are not successful? The difference my friends is between wanting and committing.
When you look up the definition of want it is to “have a desire to possess or do (something); wish for. This is a passive state of thinking. You can want something all day long, and never receive it. Commit is defined as to “carry out or perpetuate”, this is implies action. You will never change your results without taking action, so wanting ultimately leaves you right where you are today. I want to share an example of wanting vs committing I recently heard listening to Weight Coach Brenda Lomali. First, start by thinking of something you really want - for today perhaps consider losing weight and consider this as you work towards that.
I’m pretty sure everyone is familiar with a vending machine. Let’s imagine it’s 3:00 and you are at your desk, wanting a bag of chips. Think of all the steps you must go through in order to get the chips. You have to get out of your chair, open your pocket book and wallet to get the 2 bucks, take one step and another and another until you arrive at the vending machine. Now you decide you want the Kettle Cooked Chips - you have to lift your arm, put your money in, and press D4. Now you wait for it to drop. So - there it is sitting at the bottom of the machine. At this point you have taken many steps to get this far. Would you ever say to yourself - I’ve done so much to get here and now I am just too tired to finish? No! It’s so close. You are committed to getting the bag of chips. So you bend down and enjoy. Now - let’s say your dollar was crinkled and rejected by the machine. Will you just turn around and go back to your desk? Not likely. If you are committed to getting the chips you try to smooth out the money, or ask a co worker for change - you do what you need to in order to get the chips.

Commitment is taking action until you get your desired results. Don’t just want to lose weight - be committed to do whatever it takes until you get there. You will encounter obstacles - thats ok - it’s part of the process. Imagine just leaving the bag of chips at the bottom - you were so close and did all the right things leading up - keep doing it. It is not always going to be easy or comfortable - that is what you are currently doing, and it is not working. If you want to see a change you need to commit to massive action. When you make the change from wanting to committing you will be amazed at the results - you totally got this!
