Weighing In after Birthday

Mindful Weighs Wednesday

This past weekend was my birthday, and come Monday the scale gave me evidence that I enjoyed myself.  Here is the thing though - I did not let that number set me up for a terrible week ahead.  In the program I follow and teach we discuss being in control, decisions ahead of time, exceptions, and math vs. drama.  I was able to use all of these tools around the weekend, and at no time would beating myself up and negative talk accomplished anything.  Today I will share how some of these may be helpful to you in the future.

Whenever we develop a food protocol it is done 24 hours in advance.  This allows us to plan decisions ahead of time with the managing part of our brain.  When we are working on decreasing our over desire for flour and sugar it is important to not allow the primitive brain to be in control.  When we are giving into urges we perpetuate the reward pattern, and it will not make us successful in our goal to lose weight.  At this point in my life I appreciate every year I make it to another so I actually decided at the start of the month I would have 2 exception days.

When you make an exception you add awareness to the situation.  Don’t go into the exception thinking "I can have whatever I want'.  It is more beneficial to have a plan and increase your consciousness as to what the plan is, and why.  Decide on the date, write down why you are making the exception, include your action plan - what specifically will you be eating, and consider the consequences you are signing up for.  When you take the time to do that you are much more likely to step outside of your brain and look at what you are planning and decide if it is truly worth it.

Lastly, the entire weight loos journey comes down to math and drama.  The math is the number on the scale.  The drama is all you tell yourself when you see that number.  The number is simply a data point on your plan that you gather, understand where it came from, and move on.  I know the delicious cannoli and pizza I had on my birthday led me to a higher number on Monday.  I was in complete control, I planned and now I move on.  Don’t let the scale de-rail your efforts.  Look at the number, learn and move on.

This program is not based on the old thinking of calories in, calories out.  The foundation is based on science around the importance of insulin, as well as how we think about weight loss.  It’s so nice to have control of setting my protocol, learning from my choices and deciding if I want to have the same outcome next year.  For now, I get back to the plan and enjoy feeling fantastic with foods that fuel my body.
