When You Stop Beating Yourself Up and Start Doing This You Win
Imagine if beating ourselves up to get to thin actually worked? I mean seriously, how often do you tell yourself you are "being bad", you "shouldn't have ate that", or you "have been good", but don't see the scale moving so why keep going? This never works. Ever.
So - I want to encourage you to drop the negative self talk as step one when you working on weight loss. This may be a challenge because you have done it for so long it may just slip in as an automatic response. The work for you is to notice when you hear yourself talk like that. Would you ever say that to a bestie telling you the same story? No. So when you notice your brain going there take a pause - you don't have to believe what it is telling you, and you can shift the thought to something that will serve you as you reach toward your goal.
Decide on purpose to come from a curious and compassionate mind. There is not "bad" or "good". It is all learning. The tools I teach really emphasize that it is not "calories in calories out", so it truly is a new way of thinking. When you think about learning new things you become curious as to what works best for you. You stay the course, because as with any new thing, there will be bumps along the way.
Any time you say you "shouldn't have" you are just fighting against reality. Maybe you did eat something off plan. Ok - now what - what do you make it mean? Do you want to continue to berate yourself, feeling negative and then maybe eating again off plan so you don't feel the terrible feelings? Instead you can make it mean it is a great learning experience. Write down exactly what you ate off plan. Take some time to look at what was going on in that moment, and decide what you will do next time you are faced with a similar situation. This my friend is so much more helpful to you then the negative chatter.
You will have to do some hard things along the way of your weight loss journey. But think about the last hard thing you did - now looking back it is likely easy and you may even laugh at how you thought it was going to be hard. Every time you do hard things you grow. Embrace this time as your last time to lose weight. Be willing to do hard things. Be willing to be compassionate and curious. Honestly - if beating ourselves up was the answer we would like have an underweight epidemic on our hands! Be mindful today, and kind to yourself. Remember - you can do hard things.
