Why Dreaming Is Important to Weight Loss
Doing this work is about so much more than the number on the scale. It is about who you are becoming along the way. It is about showing yourself things do not have to be the same. So often I have clients tell me "they have never been able to lose weight" - guess what - this time you can. When we go to our past to look for evidence of success we will be disappointed. Here's the thing - if you have not been successful to this point you will not find the evidence to support it; instead you want to envision what the future holds for you at your new weight.
Here is an analogy I like to use to explain how looking to you past will not get you to where you want to go. Imagine a toddler learning to walk. She gets up, falls down. She gets up, falls down. She gets up.. you get the idea. Lots of falling and lots of getting up. Now imagine if after the first 3 falls she decided this wasn't worth it, she has not been successful in the past, and will not continue. She would look pretty ridiculous as an adult crawling around. No - even without evidence from the past, she continues to do the work in order to get walking and soon running.
I wonder what happens to us along the way. When we are young we had all these future focused goals - we plan to complete high school, we plan to go to college, we plan to start and amazing career, we plan to get married, and plan to have kids. And then what? We kinda just stop dreaming. As if we have accomplished everything we set out for. But what if there is more to our evolution? What if we started to believe we could lose the weight we want to? What if like the toddler learning to walk, we just kept getting up?
I encourage you to start looking to your future for the feelings that will generate the actions necessary to get to your goal. Imagine yourself at your ideal weight. Really take the time to consider how you will feel, what size you will be, and how you will think about your body. Remember - everything we do is because we think it will make us feel a certain way. When you think about all the great things ahead you will start to feel more motivated and you are much more likely to succeed vs looking to negative thoughts of the past.
Decide on purpose to define yourself based who you want to be, not where you have been. Decide on purpose this time can be different. You have so much time left - decide on purpose to make this the best year of your life. You totally go this my friend - encouragement not only from me, but from your future self as well.
