This Is What Happens When You Desire Wine

Desire, defined as a strong feeling of wanting to have something or wishing for something to happen. Desire is something we learn.  This seems counter intuitive because we think we either desire our husbands or we don't, (I do ๐Ÿ˜‰), we either desire watermelon or we don't, and the list can go on.  When it comes to drinking wine we think it's innate - we either desire it, or we don't.  But really, we have just learned to desire the wine through programming our brain.

We think we don't have control over it and it seems we drink involuntarily.  When we learn something and repeat it many many times the brain recognizes it as a pattern and moves it from the prefrontal cortex to the lower brain so it can be automatic.  Think back to when you first started driving.  It took a lot of energy to pay attention; both hands on the wheel 10-2, slow down around the corners, stay on the road (well - at least for me it took a lot of energy - I wasn't that good ๐Ÿ˜‚).  Think about now, and how there are times you can arrive some place and ask yourself how you got there - it's automatic because you have done it so many times.

Just like drinking.  Nothing has gone wrong.  It is normal to feel this way.  You have practiced enough, and rewarded enough.  I think this information is so important to know.  It can be scary thinking you are out of control, and maybe you find yourself questioning "Why did I drink when I told myself I wasn't going to", or "Why did I drink so much more than I wanted to?".  When you understand desire you understand that nothing has taken over.  You have programmed your brain unconsciously to desire automatically.

You are the one that trained your brain to do that.

You are the one that practiced enough to feel the desire.

The best news is - if you are the one that created it, you are the one that can uncreate it.

Just because you have practiced it doesn't mean you have to keep doing it, even if it feels hard to stop.
