How Hungry Are You To Lose Weight?



I just completed the Mindful Eating pack from my Headspace app (headspace.com), and it was so interesting to see my level of awareness change throughout the week.  I love all the different packs, but what was interesting about this particular one, was how in line it is with what I teach clients who want to lose weight, and yet I still feel like I learned something new.

How often do you actually pay attention to what you are eating?  If I’m keeping it real here, I’m usually shoveling down a salad in my car between appointments.  It is a healthy meal, but not always super mindful.  If you are struggling with losing weight, becoming more aware of your eating, and how you feel, is so important.  So often we just mindlessly eat and then wonder why the scale isn't moving. 

I'll let you in on a secret - the reason it is not moving is when you are not eating on purpose to fuel your body you are likely over eating, which is one of the top reasons you are over weight.  It seems pretty straight forward, yet if you are struggling you may not even take the time to truly understand your hunger scale.  

I invite you to try this tool this week.  Begin utilizing a hunger scale specific to your body.  Take the time to pause, and pay attention to how you are feeling before, during, and after you eat.  

Imagine the scale looks like this: 
       -10, -9, -8, -7, -6, -5, -4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 
(starving)                                                                                    (stuffed)

First, ask yourself where you are now.  

How does hunger feel at -4?

How does hunger feel at -8?  
(Do you ever even allow yourself to get there?)

How do you feel at +4?

How do you feel at +8?

Usually a good range it to be between -4 and +4.  Keep in mind - this is physical hunger, and physical hunger is different than emotional hunger.  So often we eat because we are happy, or tired, or bored.  When you begin paying attention to the difference you will see the difference on the scale.  That my friend, is when you will blow your own mind!
