The Importance of "The Good Old Days" When Learning To Drink Less

As I was driving home last night I heard this song from Kesha and Macklemore - the lyrics really caught my attention - "I wish somebody would have told me, babe that someday, these would be the good old days".  SO true!  How often are you either thinking back to your past, or thinking to your future, but not really staying present in the moment?  I would like to take a look at the three options.

Your past is over.  In this moment, it only means what you make it mean - today.  Do you even remember it accurately?  I bet there is a story or two that you may be telling about an event that occurred, and somebody else who was there recalls it entirely differently.  Do you tell the story of your past about how it happened to you - or have you ever considered telling it in a way that you find evidence of how it happened for you?  Do you look to your past as evidence for what you can or can't do today?  For example - do you tell yourself you have never made dinner without wine and you won't ever be able to? Not a fact my friend- just what you are thinking.  Best. News. Ever.  You get to decide what your past means, and how you want to live today.  These are the good old days.

Your future is not yet here.  As we do the work we want to strive to live like the person we want to become - but we want to start doing that today.  If you think you are going to be happier when you "arrive" at your goal you will miss out on all the fun along the way.   The growth and steps you are taking today are what keeps you learning and succeeding.  These are the good old days.

The present is all you have.  Take the time to be mindful of where you are, what you are doing, and plan to live your life on purpose.  When you are trying to drink less staying present in the moment is a key tool in accomplishing your goal.  Be present with knowing what you are thinking when you reach for the drink, be present with feeling how you feel in the moment, and be present in knowing this time can be different.

These truly are the good old days - how do you want to create the life you imagine today?
