Don't Forget This If You Are Trying To Drink Less

I was at an exciting football game this weekend.  It was the quarterback's first start at home, we saw record breaking receptions, multiple turnovers, down by 17 late in the 3rd, tied the game, double overtime, people yelling in the stands - and it ended in a win for my team!

The reason I am sharing this, is because it got me to thinking about how these ideas are important parallels as you learn to drink less, or achieve any goal in life.

Notice, it was the QB's first home start, they moved forward, they moved back, but they  never gave up.  They had no idea going into the game that they were going to win in double OT, but they had a goal to win.

When we start any goal we typically don’t know how we will accomplish it.  The first step is - do something. You have to make a play. The first play may not be the exact one that moves you closer to your goal - but you always have another opportunity.

So often we just give up. If you are trying to drink less and you don't follow your plan on a particular day, that doesn’t mean the game is over. It means you learn from what happened and you try again.

Many people are afraid they will “fail”, so they don’t even start.  Do you know when you "officially" fail?

You fail when you quit, or you fail in advance when you don’t even try.

Think about this - would you ever tell a kid who is learning how to walk that after the 2nd or 3rd time falling down she should just give up because clearly she is not getting it?  Would you tell her it doesn't appear that she will figure it out?

No!

You tell her to get up - brush herself off and try again.  You encourage her - she will get it. And then one day - she takes off.  Every time she falls and gets up, her legs get stronger, and she gets closer to becoming the kid that walks.

You guys - this is for any goal.

You don’t fail.

You learn along the way.

You become stronger with each lesson.

You keep taking steps to become your next best self.

One more thing - remember how I said people were yelling? Well, some are yelling that the coaches should be doing things differently, and other were cheering along the way. You will encounter this as well. Not everyone is going to agree with your goal - some people are going to think you are crazy, and others will support you. That’s ok - what anyone else thinks doesn’t have to be any of your business.  You just keep taking the steps that move you closer to your win.

You are the play caller of your life.

You truly can create the life you imagine.
